A Complete Gospel

Lately, I have been thinking about the many issues our modern churches face when it comes to trying to get more people in the Church and attracting new members.  I’ve been dwelling in the book of Romans frequently, since this is the book that I have been teaching through for the last year with the youth at my Church.  Spending that much time in the book of Romans has made me think about the gospel message and how it’s presented in our day and age.  More than ever, I’ve noticed people not mentioning sin, in an effort to not make the unsaved feel better and, hopefully, stay in the Church.  We’ve confused bodies in the Church with actual successful conversions.  So I want to deal with two major elements of the gospel message:  Law and Grace.

The Law

The Law is both wonderful and dreadful at the same time.  When I say Law, I’m not talking about 5-0 chasing down your cousin Pookie, but I am talking about the Law of the Lord as summed up by the 10 commandments.  The Law is wonderful because it shows us how God feels about sin.  As Christians, when we think on it daily, it has a way of pushing us towards Christ.  Psalm 1:2 tells us

But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

However the Law has a very opposite effect to those who are not in Christ.  The Law brings us to an understanding of our sinful nature.  Romans 3:19-20 says:

“Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”

So the Law of the Lord will make a sinner specifically aware of their sinfulness, because we all have sinned.

Law without Grace

There are many of you who have had Law only presentations.  You were told about the Law and your sins.  You were told about a God of wrath who punishes sinners.  Although this is true about God, if that is all you are taught about Him, then that is not a complete picture of the Gospel.  As a result of hearing a Law only presentation you lived your life with a heavy burden, trying to earn God’s approval and righteousness by attempts at Law keeping.  You would try to clean up the outside act, being one way in front of your parents and Church people, but still living with the internal problem of sin.  This is because the Law doesn’t save us by itself, but it is key in bringing us to our knees to realize that we are not as perfect as we thought we were.  That’s where grace comes in.

Grace

Grace is truly amazing!  Grace is God letting us off the hook when we deserve otherwise.  Grace is the favor of God given to us despite our sins.  It is a gift.  Ephesians 2:8 tells us:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

If it were not for grace, none of us could be saved!  I thank God that He saves by grace and not by the merit of our works, else we’d all be destroyed.  Grace, however, must be understood in contrast to works.  For the person who thinks that they have not sinned against God, how can they understand that grace is undeserved pardoning of a sinner?  In the mind of the proud, they deserve to be pardoned by God.  But the humble knows their works are evil and that they deserve the punishment of their sin.  They then see the greatness of grace.

Grace is what salvation boils down to: God graciously loves us and gives salvation unconditionally.  Jesus sheds His blood on the cross even though He’s innocent.  He sheds it for guilty sinners who should be paying that price in their own blood.  This is grace: believers given what we don’t deserve.  What a relief it is to be in Jesus!

Grace without Law

Like the Law, Grace is one of those Biblical truths that has been told in part, also.  Many of us have been told a message of Jesus that only included love, kindness, and grace.  You may have heard about this loving Jesus who loves you and cares for you, who wants to be with you.  While these things are true about God, if you are given a grace only presentation, you are not getting a complete picture of the gospel.  I think more Churches and youth groups fall into this category because we really don’t want to offend people.  We don’t want to turn people away from such a great gift of salvation when we know it’s wonderful!

But consider the drastic results of a love only presentation.  I admit that leaving out the Law feels better and seems to produce more people passionate to accept Jesus, so it must work, right?  Well, if we were to examine the motives of people who come to accept Jesus when there is no understanding of sin, you’ll find that many there had a very different idea of what they were “accepting Christ” for.  Some may have very legitimate reasons why they feel they need a Savior.  Some has illnesses.  Some have issues with money.  Others are in need of good grades.  While these are all real problems that we face in life, they are not the motivators of true conversion.  The only motivation that draws us genuinely to the foot of Christ is the recognition of our sinfulness and need for a redeemer.  The only means by which we are saved is by grace through faith.

Apply it!

We have discussed the Law and Grace and the importance of both of these elements being present in the gospel presentation.  When you share your faith with others, it’s important that there is an awareness made of sins and offences against God.  Without this, men don’t understand why they need Jesus.  However this alone will cause people to persue works righteousness as a means for salvation, which is impossible.  It’s also important that you share the grace of God with men.  They need to know that a suitable atonement is in Christ alone!  They need to know the love of God and that we are saved by His grace alone by faith alone.  Without this element, it men are left without answers as to how a man can be saved.  But presenting a love only message leaves people unaware of the sins that we have and the need for grace.

Be unashamed of the gospel!  Point to the reason we need salvation.  Point to the grace of God.  Let’s go out there and glorify Christ in our evangelism!

  • Emmanuel (Jul 7th, 08 at 10:23 PM) My pastor conveyed to us the common meaning of a word that's frequently used in the Bible. The meaning is this: I'm down with that!! and the word itself is AMEN!! haha, keep it up, preachin' the truth even when a majority of Christians are watering down the Gospel; Health, Wealth, and Prosperity; and being inclusivists, it's dangerous times when the Christian no longer believes what a Christian should- Praise God for your salvation man- thanks for takin' the time to share with us.
  • Donna (Jul 16th, 08 at 8:34 AM) Amen, needed to read this today.
  • Edson M (Jul 28th, 08 at 6:45 AM) Thank you for this i am going to use it for my bible study with my fellow young believers.
  • Gary (Jul 29th, 08 at 10:38 PM) since I was saved in '03, the gospel message has been blazin in my heart. Since a year ago, God has really been teaching me how to biblically present it, showing the law & grace! It blesses me to see believers in other places grabbin a hold of these truths and runnin with it!! Thank God for you brother.
  • patrick (Aug 4th, 08 at 12:58 AM) This is a true blessing. I really appreciate your ministry. I'm from the New Orleans Area. Before Hurricane Katrina a number of friends and all belong to different churches in the area, Yet, we all fellowshiped together during our marriage minsitry gatherings we would hold once a month. We now live in all parts of the country but communicate via the web. This message is a true blessing that I would like to share with all. As I be watchful and prayerful that me and my family don't falter. Thanks and God Bless.
  • Crystal Simmons (Aug 5th, 08 at 6:32 PM) well said!!! I too have been struggling with how to present a correct understanding of Christ's atonement, not neglecting both the importance of the Law and Grace. I thank God for your elegant teaching on the matter and plan to use this in ministering with my youth. This was truly a blessing.
  • Amy Fletcher (Aug 10th, 08 at 1:01 PM) This outreach is so awesome and needed, I just wish it could get more circulation and faster. Don't ever stop! The world needs you!
  • Shekinah (Aug 13th, 08 at 5:52 AM) 6 years ago a close friend of mine, told me he was gay. i was 15yrs old and uncertain of what to do. i remebered a sermon i had heard a while back where we were encouraged to 'love the sinner and hate the sin' - my friend wasn't a christian, me and him spent many hours talking back and forth, him supporting science and me God. i told him that i didnt agree with the whole 'gay thing' but i was still his friend, i still loved him and that i'd always be there if he needed me. we''re still really close, but as we got older i felt i needed to talk to him more about it but was unsure of how to.
i read this article the other day - and feelt compelled to do more - he isn't my only 'gay' friend, but he's my closest and i've always felt uncomfortable with raising the issue. i sent him the following message - tryna reflect ur example of Law and grace in witnessing:

I stand by what i said in that it is a choice. When i was in the States i was having a convo with this kid, who went on the road trip with us, she's a religious studies major and a lesbian - she told me that the bible doesn't talk about homosexuality as being a bad thing - therefore it's not a sin. i decided to check it out for myself - here's what i found:

    1 Corinthians ch 6 vs 9-11

    9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do you not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexual offenders

    10. nor thieves, nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

    11. And that's what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

To me this makes it clear - that any of the things listed above are a sin, and like any sin, we choose to do it.
when i say choose - as humans we are naturally inclined to go against the word of God and live contrary to the Bible. it's our natural inclination to sin - however when we realise that it is a sin, once the truth through Christ, His love and His Word is revealed to us, we can choose to live for Him, doing what is right in His eyes.

That means going against our natural inhibitions - it aint easy but it's what we gotta do.

The last verse, where it talks about thats what some of us WERE but we are now washed and sanctified - that tells me that even though we have sinned in God's eyes (Romans ch 3 vs 23 for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God), that he is still willing to forgive us and make us new.
Sin is sin in Gods eye, no one bigger than the other. its humans that label sins in degrees of severity. Once we know that something we are doing is wrong we have a choice to either keep doing it or to stop. That choice is ours and ours alone.

i guess what i'm looking for is some advice as to whether or not this is the irght way, what is the right way, what other options are available for witnessing in these circumstances.

    Stay blessed.

  • shofar kadesh (Aug 26th, 08 at 10:36 AM) God bless, bro. That was a very thorough edifying presentation of the Gospel Message. The fellowship I grew up attending was very "law without grace". At my current church God With Us Ministries, where I serve, I constantly stress to the youth, youth leaders-in-training and young adults alike, that God's Law & Grace need to be presented to the unbeliever (& newly saved). Also, Salvation is evidenced by a change in lifestyle. Keep em comin' Tony. Peace
  • GD (Sep 3rd, 08 at 2:16 PM) Thats good! i Make sure i use both when presenting the gospel but sometime i think i come on to strong like " If you dont except Christ your to Hell" There like Aint you suppose to break it to me easy but sometime you have to let'em being subtle they could miss something!! God Bless yall I love what yall are doing it real encouraging! Hollers
  • Regis (Sep 23rd, 08 at 6:09 AM) Very edifying Tony!
  • Lei (Sep 25th, 08 at 3:55 PM) Yeah baby!
It's really good to hear someone inside the church, that ministers and has a good understanding of the Law & grace. John 4 Yeshua says true worshippers must worship in Spirit and in Truth. And that's it the spirit which in some ways can be seen as grace. And truth, which is found in his word/law.

Ezek 37 speaks of the 2 sticks becoming one, Ephraim and Judah. I also see that as Ephraim or the church; who have the spirit of GOD and have received grace by accepting the messiah. And Judah as the nation of Jews (truth) those who have kept Torah/ law. One without the other is not enough!

Neither is done away with and both are very much needed! Keep spitting and reppin' the king!

    Shalom!
  • Driven (Sep 29th, 08 at 12:59 PM) That's exactly it! The "Way of the Master!"
  • KD (Oct 6th, 08 at 2:09 AM) This is amazing!!! thank you so much for helping me realize how to teach this stuff to the youth i work with. you do not dummy it down...you speak it in its totality not leaving a bit out. thank you for your brave teaching to kids and for not believing that they cannot handle the totality of the Truth.
    wow again
  • Rida (Oct 7th, 08 at 1:46 AM) How can I teach that Jesus and God is the same person abd tha Christians are not serving two? We will not see two in heaven. What does it mean that Jesus is sitting on the right hand of the Father. This leads me to doubt...is there two?
  • mikey da souljah (Oct 30th, 08 at 11:58 PM) actually there are three parts (father son and holy ghost) but they are all one. it like water ice and steam, its all water just different manifestations. they have different roles and different names but they are all god, just like water ice and steam have different names and different funtions but really they are just different versions of the same thing.
  • mikey da souljah (Oct 31st, 08 at 12:14 AM) theres really three(father son and holy ghost) but they are still one. its a lot like water, it comes in three forms: water(liquid) ice and steam but yet its all water. The godhead has three manifestations of diety with three seperate names and roles, just like water has three seperate entities with three seperate behaviors and three seperate names yet ITS ALL WATER. just like how we have Jesus(high priest, antonement, etc) God the Father(judge, lord, ruler, etc)and Holy Spirit(comforter, source of our divine power and ability to do miracles(which we need to get back to doin btw)etc) yet THEY ARE ALL GOD.

  • Benny (Jun 15th, 10 at 7:10 PM) I would like to know if u believe that you can loose your salvation do you believe in once saved always saved?
  • djmasterchill (Jul 16th, 10 at 10:35 AM) I agree with your article it seems as we forget that mercy doesn't always mean everything is ok for the believer. When we present a Gospel that leans towards mercy but doesn't share the reality of our sinful condition we mislead people wanting the truth. They are mislead because without having an understanding of our sinfulness we can't understand completely what God the father did through Christ Jesus the son.
