Biography

“What you do isn’t nearly as important as who you do it for.”

Kevin Burgess was born in St. Petersburg, FL and raised in Southern Illinois. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, and that meant big changes for him and his mother.  “I went from the suburbs to the hood in one day,” KB recalls.  With his father now absent from his life—which brought fear, depression and pain—KB succumbed to peer pressure and found himself in a very dark place. Yet, by God’s grace, his academic prowess withstood his personal problems and earned him a spot in a program that allowed him to enter college early.  But KB’s struggles beyond the classroom and his environment would soon overwhelm him, leaving him on the verge of committing suicide.  Fortunately, amidst these ups and downs during his second semester, KB was introduced to Christian rap. “I was given a cd with eight tracks on it, and I loved every one of them. I couldn’t believe it was Christian music, because the dude on the cover looked just like me” he remembers. It was that same cd, at age 16, that introduced him to Jesus, and KB has been walking with the Lord ever since.

After managing to finish the program and with the road to success not far from him, KB surprised his friends and family by deciding not to pursue a career in Business. “I felt a clear call to abandon the ‘American Dream’ and enroll in bible college.”  While studying Theology at Trinity College for four years, he befriended a group of Christian rappers, and together they formed His Glory Alone (HGA). Over time, HGA accumulated a steady following that included Lecrae, Ben Washer, and DJ Official.  He was invited onto the “Acquire the Fire” tour by Lecrae, and he was asked to join the Reach Records team just a few months later.  KB released his debut mixtape “Who is KB?” in 2011, which garnered over 30K downloads.  He has also been featured on several Reach projects including: Lecrae’s Rehab (“I Used to Do it Too”), Man Up, Trip Lee’s The Good Life (“One Sixteen”), and Andy Mineo’s Heroes for Sale (“The Saints”).  Designed to help people see God and be obsessed with what we see, in 2012, KB released his first full-length album Weight and Glory. He has toured around the world since the release of his debut and has become a staple in the 1-1-Six movement. “100”, his latest EP, aims to make listeners realize that what you do isn’t nearly as important as who you do it for, and it is inspired by his belief that “God regards not the greatness of our work, but the love it is done with” (Brother Lawrence).

KB resides in Tampa, FL with his wife where he indulges in crab legs, boxing, heading up HGA, and serving at Living Faith Bible Fellowship Church.  “Right now I am learning to steward and shepherd my platform as a rapper,” while holding fast to his conviction that “being faithful and obedient to what God has asked of you whether in Beverly Hills or Ethiopia” determines success. To that end, he hopes that his role on the Reach Records team will extend beyond making good music, “I want to be someone people can look up to and trust as a deliverer of truth. If I can accomplish that, then I will have been successful.”
